Raise your hand if you want a cracked tooth. We would be shocked if one of you did so! While it’s not something anyone wants to deal with, it is a common enough occurrence. The wrong bite down on a particularly hard popcorn kernel, years of grinding your teeth while you’re sleeping, and more can all leave you with a cracked tooth. While you may try to be extra careful when you eat or wear a nightguard, accidents do occur and a crack in your tooth can take you by surprise. That being said, you can still prepare yourself for what to do if it unexpectedly happens.
Call Your Dentist
The first thing you should do is call your dentist. The reason is that there can be many different types of cracks, including tiny ones on the enamel and then severe ones that extend all the way to the gumline. When you visit your dentist, they can bring you for a visual exam to see how big and deep the crack actually is and recommend the correct treatment. That treatment could be a dental crown, dental bonding, or a root canal depending on the case.
At-Home Care
If your cracked tooth is causing you pain, you can take some over-the-counter pain medication until you visit your dentist. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions. You may also find that rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water can also provide some relief as it cleans the area. Depending on how severe your tooth fracture is, eating soft foods that don’t require a lot of biting down or pressure can help too.
